Chartis Technology’s contribution in addressing skill shortage.

At Chartis Technology, we are passionate about supporting the future of the geospatial industry. We are fortunate to share our expertise and knowledge with the GIS community through our offering of online and in-house training courses. Earlier this month we had the pleasure of introducing Ben, a final year Computer Science student who is majoring in Software Development at the University of Newcastle, to the Open Source GIS desktop platform, QGIS.

As part of the “Work Integrated Learning” module of his course, Ben chose to work with Newcastle Bushfire Consulting, under Philip Couch, who was seeking automation in his daily GIS workflows. Philip himself had recently completed the Chartis Technology online Essentials and Pursuit QGIS courses and recommended Ben attend as an introduction to GIS.

Designed to introduce techniques to new users of QGIS and enable users to become competent in QGIS software, the Chartis Technology QGIS Essentials course helped Ben to familiarise himself with common features and tools in QGIS used on a regular basis. He found the content on Plugins most helpful as his work with Newcastle Bushfire Consulting will include using existing QGIS Plugins as well as development of his own. The benefit of the course has already proved its worth with Ben commenting “Knowing popular existing plugins, as well as places where I could search for more niche or specific plugins, has already proved invaluable only a week after the course”.

Ben was able to build on his foundation knowledge of QGIS through the Pursuit course on his second day of training. This online course focuses on enhancing knowledge and building on more of the advanced QGIS Features available. A hands-on course, Ben was able to actively participate and experience advanced mapping techniques enabling him to use QGIS in a professional environment.

Ben felt he “got the most out of the Pursuit course”. His key highlights were “working with the attribute table for given data” as it will be something he will use regularly during development. In addition, “selecting and manipulating data with the expression builder feature” is a skill he has used several times since attending the course, enhancing his work quality and speed. Unique to our Chartis Technology QGIS course, Ben also enjoyed Georeferencing the Bathurst 1000 racetrack.

In his post training feedback Ben commented on the ease in delivery and access to the online course, given his remote location. “I found the online delivery of the course very helpful, due to the distance between myself and Chartis Technology’s office, learning online meant I did not have to travel far, interrupting my University studies. I’m very fortunate for the opportunity to take both courses and would like to thank Chartis deeply for the experience.”

Chartis Technology are very proud to be able to support Ben’s further education by funding the QGIS Pursuit and Essentials course.
